rise and shine pupsLast week’s phrase of the week was the saying “You get what you pay for.” This week’s English phrase of the week is “rise and shine.”

Rise and shine: What does it mean?

This is just a phrase we use when we wake up, or when we want someone to wake up and get out of bed.

I can break it down like this:

Rise

  • get up
  • wake up
  • get out of bed
  • stop sleeping, etc

And shine

  • start the day
  • start moving, etc.

It’s that simple: get up, and start your day. “Rise and shine.”

You can probably tell that “shine” has a positive meaning, so sometimes it means just to get up and start the day right.

Examples:

John: “I’m going to wake Ryan up.”

(John ‘goes into Ryan’s room).

John: “Rise and shine, Ryan!”

Tired Ryan: “Okay.” 🙁

The military officer came into our room and yelled “rise and shine!” in an intense voice that woke everyone up.

Action

Have a good week ahead! Study English right after you rise and shine this week, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

I didn't know anyone in South Korea. I couldn't speak Korean. I was nervous and excited to continue the next part of my life journey. It's been great, but it hasn't always been easy.
